In 2025, the Youth Media Centre played a key role in amplifying youth voices during the Federal election period, providing tailored media support to youth-led organisations and campaigns. This included hands-on assistance with media pitching, interview preparation, messaging, and rapid-response commentary, helping young advocates navigate media environments that are often difficult to access or unsafe for young people.
Another big media moment occurred when the UK Government announced it was going to lower the voting age to 16, which sparked media interest in Australia. The Youth Media Centre coordinated the media response from the Make it 16 campaign, resulting in 9 media pieces featuring young people.
This year the Media for Advocacy program was delivered twice, with in-person workshops held on Dharug Country (Western Sydney) and Boorloo (Perth). These intensive sessions brought together young people to build practical media skills, deepen their understanding of the Australian media landscape, and explore how to engage safely and strategically with journalists.
47 young people participated across two events on Dharug Country and in Boorlo
Examples of safe and strategic collaboration between young people & media:
Ethical media: ABC UK Lowers Voting Age to 16. The journalist respected consent, asked thoughtful questions, and the young spokesperson felt safe and valued.
